What Is The CLT Program?

The NLA and Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) offers landscapers the Certified Landscape Technician-Exterior (CLT-E) program. The CLT-E is an international hands-on testing program administered by 20 states and provinces that recognizes proficiency in the landscape workforce, upgrades the status of the landscape professional and provides the public with a means of identifying qualified landscape professionals.   The NLA offers three CLT exams in Installation, Maintenance or Irrigation. To become a Certified Landscape Technician, an applicant must pass a General Comprehension test, Core test and Practical (hands-on) Problems. Who Should Take the CLT – Exterior Exam?

Any exterior technician who wants to establish credentials by meeting international standards for safe and effective operation of machinery and demonstrating a thorough understanding of all facets of the position should take the exam.  For the best chance of success, it is recommended that candidates have:

4,000 hours of work in the landscape industry, or 2,000 hours in the landscape industry, plus the completion of a 2 or 4 year curriculum in a landscape major, or 1,000 hours in the landscape industry, plus the completion of a 2 or 4 year curriculum in a landscape major that included completing an internship in the field.  Why Get Certified? Certification at the company level establishes credibility and the motivation to constantly improve. By investing in employee’s certification, the company is involved and willing to put forth the extra effort to go above and beyond what is required to do business. This same professionalism can be seen in the projects the company completes. The certification program can offer companies a built-in training program. As employees study for the exam and pass each element, they are being trained for job success.
